If you're hearing strange popping, rumbling, or knocking sounds coming from your utility closet or basement, your water heater is trying to tell you something. While it can sound alarming—almost like the tank is boiling over—the root cause is usually a common, treatable issue: sediment buildup.

The Culprit: Hard Water Scale

Water naturally contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. When water is heated inside your tank, these minerals precipitate out of the water and settle at the bottom of the tank, forming a layer of hard, crusty sediment.

Why Does It Pop?

In a standard gas water heater, the burner is located at the very bottom of the tank. As the sediment layer grows thicker, it forms a barrier between the heating element and the water. Water gets trapped underneath the sediment layer, closest to the burner.

When the burner turns on, this trapped water boils rapidly and turns to steam. The steam bubbles violently burst through the heavy layer of sediment to reach the top of the tank. The popping and rumbling noises you hear are literally those steam bubbles exploding through the mineral crust.

Why You Need to Fix It Immediately

  • Higher Energy Bills: Because the burner has to heat the thick layer of sediment before it can heat the water, your system uses significantly more gas or electricity.
  • Overheating: The sediment traps extreme heat against the bottom of the tank, which can damage the glass lining and cause the tank to fracture.
  • Premature Failure: Left untreated, the continuous overheating will eventually rust out the bottom of the tank, resulting in a flooded floor and a mandatory replacement.

The Solution

The best way to fix and prevent this issue is an annual water heater flush. This process drains the tank entirely and uses water pressure to blow the accumulated sediment out of the drain valve.
