5 Warning Signs You Have a Failing Sewer Line

Knowledge Base
Your main sewer line is the single most important pipe on your property. Because it is buried deep underground, a failure often goes completely unnoticed until raw sewage overflows into your bathtubs. By learning the early warning signs of a sewer line failure, you can act before a catastrophic disaster strikes.
1. Multiple Drains Backing Up
If your kitchen sink clogs, it's an isolated issue. But if you flush the toilet and water backs up into the bathtub, you have a blockage in your main sewer lateral. All the drains in your house lead to this single exit pipe.
2. Gurgling Noises
When a sewer line is partially blocked by tree roots or a belly (a sag in the pipe), trapped air struggles to escape. As water flows past the blockage, it forces air up through your P-traps, causing your toilets and sinks to make a distinct "gurgling" or "bubbling" noise.
3. Unusually Green, Lush Grass
Raw sewage acts as an incredibly potent fertilizer. If you notice a patch of grass in your front yard that is much greener, taller, and growing faster than the rest of the lawn, it is highly likely that your sewer pipe is cracked and leaking nutrient-rich wastewater directly into the soil.
4. Sewage Odors in the Yard
A healthy, sealed sewer system is completely airtight. If you can smell a foul, rotten-egg or sewage odor in your yard or basement, a pipe has fractured and is venting dangerous sewer gases into the environment.
